BRAMPTON: Shakib Al Hasan backed his economical bowling figures of 1/24 with an anchoring knock to power Bangla Tigers Mississauga to edge Surrey Jaguars by two wickets in the ongoing GT20 Canada 2024.

In a match that was reduced to 18 overs per side, Tigers’ captain Shakib won the toss and put Jaguars into bat first.

The Jaguars’ batting unit struggled against a Curtis Campher-led Tigers bowling attack and was ultimately curtailed to 108/8 in the allotted overs.

Campher ran through the Tigers’ middle and lower order and returned brilliant figures of 4/17 in his three overs.

He was supported by Dilon Heyliger, Shakib Al Hasan, Shoriful Islam and David Wiese, who picked one wicket apiece.

Wicketkeeper batter Shreyas Movva remained the top-scorer for the Jaguars with a cautious 21, followed by Virandeep Singh (17) and Sunil Narine (16*twoi).

Chasing a modest 109-run target, the Tigers had to make hard yards as they lost eight wickets in the process and amass the total on the third delivery of the final over.

The Tigers had a shaky start to the pursuit as they lost their opener Khalid Shah (1) in the third over with just 19 runs on the board.

Coming out to bat at No.3, Shakib Al Hasan took the reigns of the Tigers’ batting charge and led them from the front with a sensible knock.

The star all-rounder finally perished in the 16th over after putting his team in touching distance.

He remained the top-scorer for the Tigers with a 30-ball 36, which featured four fours and a six.

Besides him, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (19), Muhammad Waseem (16) and Iftikhar Ahmed (12) were the other notable contributors.

Ben Lister was the pick of the bowlers for the Jaguars with 3/12 in his four overs, followed by Logan van Beek and Sunil Narine, who bagged two wickets each.

The two-wicket victory lifted Bangla Tigers Mississauga to the second in the GT20 Canada 2024 standings with eight points in six matches while Surrey Jaguars remained fifth with three points in as many matches.
