Germany thump New Zealand, reach Round 2 of World Cup of Pool 2022

BRENTWOOD: The Defending Champions Germany have eased through against New Zealand in the opening encounter and excelled into the Round 2 of the ongoing World Cup of Pool.

In the first-round match between Germany and New Zealand, the former sealed a comprehensive 7-1 triumph in the Best of 13.

German’s pair of UK Open and the World Pool Masters winner Joshua Filler and former world champion Thorsten Hohmann – the favourites of the tournament – started their world cup campaign on a high as the pair look to become the first nation to defend the title.

In the one-sided contest, the New Zealand team comprised of Matt Edwards and Simon Singleton won the lag but could not capitalize.

The two sides struggled with the pace of the table earlier in the match with Singleton missing on three for the middle pocket and ended up leaving the open table for Filler and Hohmann. The German pair wasted no time and make the early move at 1-0.

The pair of Filler and Hohmann then appeared too hot to handle for the Kiwis as they ran through the next three frames to take their lead to 4-0.

After losing their chances in the first four frames, the Kiwi pair finally seized the opportunity and sealed their first frame to cut the lead to 4-1.

The German pair appeared unharmed by their opposition’s slight retaliation and continued their domination and claimed the victory by winning the next three frames.

Following their first-round triumph, the defending champions will take on the Netherlands, who displayed almost identical domination over Morocco in their opening clash; defeating the latter 7-1.
