Former Pakistan captain calls for more opportunities for Sahibzada Farhan

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has questioned the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection policy, arguing that Sahibzada Farhan deserved more chances in the national setup given his consistent performances in domestic cricket.

Speaking on a TV channel, Latif highlighted the stark contrast between hard-hitting opener Hasan Nawaz and Farhan, making it clear that their numbers are simply not comparable.

“When you’re introducing new players into the team, you can’t just say Hasan should go ahead because he scored a century. That’s not how it works. There are other players as well,” Latif said.

“If I compare him with Sahibzada Farhan, the difference is huge. He’s been the top performer in domestic T20 tournaments for a reason.

“You can’t compare 2000 runs with 200. PCB should back those who are consistently performing. Yes, Farhan got a chance, but I believe he should have received more opportunities.”

Rashid Latif’s comments come in the wake of Farhan’s record-breaking exploits in the National T20 Cup, where he has been nothing short of sensational. His latest century in the semi-final against Abbottabad was yet another masterclass in power-hitting.

Farhan has racked up 605 runs in seven innings this season, rewriting the record books for the most runs in a single edition of the National T20 Cup. Incredibly, he broke his own previous record of 492 runs, which he had set last season over 12 innings.

The 29-year-old’s phenomenal form has also seen him break Fakhar Zaman’s national record for the most runs in a single edition of a T20 tournament.

Fakhar had amassed 588 runs in 13 innings during the 2022 Pakistan Super League (PSL), but Farhan surpassed his tally in only seven matches.

His remarkable run began with an unbeaten 114 against Lahore Whites, followed by scores of 62, 76, 162, 26, and an unbeaten 148*. With such dominant performances, the calls for his return to the national team are growing louder.
