Former Australian cricketer Stuart MacGill found guilty in drug case

Former Australian Test cricketer Stuart MacGill has been convicted of participating in the supply of cocaine in Sydney on Thursday.

On Thursday, a jury in the Sydney District Court found the former leg-spinner not guilty of involvement in a significant commercial drug supply operation that took place in April 2021.

However, he was convicted of the lesser offense of participating in drug supply.

The court heard of an illegal exchange of AUD 330,000 for one kilogram of cocaine between MacGill’s regular drug dealer and his brother-in-law, Marino Sotiropoulos.

Stuart MacGill, who hosted a meeting at his restaurant on Sydney’s north shore, denied any involvement in the drug deal.

MacGill facilitated a meeting beneath his restaurant on Sydney’s north shore but denied knowing it was a drug deal.

Prosecutors contended that the transaction would not have occurred without MacGill’s earlier involvement.

Although the jury downplayed the claim that he was aware of the drug deal, they still found him guilty of involvement in drug supply.

The 54-year-old sentencing hearing has been adjourned for eight weeks and will be announced in May 2025.

Stuart MacGill, whose career was overshadowed by Shane Warner, took 208 wickets for Australia in Test match cricket at an average of 29.02.
