Former Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques to debut for Portugal

Former Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques is set to represent his native country, Portugal, in the forthcoming T20 World Cup qualifiers, scheduled in August.

Henriques, 39, moved to Australia from Portugal at a young age and went on to represent Australia across all formats.  He represented Australia in 44 international matches across formats and remained a regular in their side for a couple of years.

With his last representation for Australia coming in 2021, he has decided to embark on a new journey with the Portugal team in a bid to help them qualify for the T20 World Cup 2028.

The Funchal-born player became eligible to represent Portugal after completing the ICC three-year waiting period for players switching from a Full Member nation to an Associate team.

Henriques disclosed the reason behind the move in an interview with Code Sports.

“I guess the opportunity for growth in the game around the world is probably not just my Portuguese heritage, but the game, more importantly, and the opportunity for growth worldwide,” he said.

Henriques said expanding the game’s reach to another 10 or 20 countries could help turn the Cricket World Cup into a truly global event.

We can improve the quality of all the engagement in, say, another 10 or 20 nations around the world, and then you’re looking at cricket World Cups that stop the entire world, as opposed to a couple of Western countries and the subcontinent.”
