Finch’s inappropriate language in England match earns ICC’s reprimand

DUBAI: Australian captain Aaron Finch has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for using inappropriate language during the first T20I against England in Perth on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the ninth over of England’s innings when Finch uttered swear words which were picked up by the stump mic.

According to ICC, the Australian skipper was found to have breached Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the “use of an audible obscenity during an International Match.”

Finch admitted the offence and received an official reprimand and earned one demerit point to his disciplinary record.

Although the violation was Finch’s first in the past 24 months, the Australian batsman runs the possibility of being suspended if further incidents occur during the remaining matches of the series or the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022.

When a player accrues four or more demerit points within a 24-month span, they are converted into suspension points and lead to a ban.

Australia lost the high-scoring opening T20I with a narrow margin as England won the match by eight runs.
