ECB appoints Jon Lewis as women’s team’s head coach

LONDON: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Friday announced former ECB’s Elite Pace Bowling Coach Jon Lewis as the new head coach of the national women’s cricket team.

Before his appointment as the women’s team’s head coach, Lewis worked with England Men’s Test and white-ball teams during his tenure as ECB’s elite pace bowling coach.

Amid his 19-year professional career, Lewis took over 1,200 professional wickets at Gloucestershire, Surrey and Sussex.

The right-arm pacer represented England in 16 international matches – 13 ODIs, two T20Is and a Test – in his brief international career that spans from 2005 to 2007.

Lewis’ first assignment will be England women’s team’s tour to West Indies later this month for ODIs and T20I series. The squads for the tour will be announced in due course by the ECB.

Speaking on his new role, Lewis expressed delight while also “can not wait to get stuck into a new challenge.”

“It’s very exciting to have been appointed as Head Coach of the England Women’s team. It’s a new challenge and one that I can’t wait to get stuck into.

“I’ve watched from a distance over the last few years and it’s clear that there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about this team’s chances going forward.

“The last couple of years have seen the introduction of some younger players and that, allied with the increased strength in depth coming from the regional game, is a really promising sign for the coming few years.

“Our immediate focus is the West Indies, and particularly getting some points on the board in the ICC Women’s Championship, and then we’ll look ahead to South Africa and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.”
