DR Congo hold toothless Portugal to a draw in FIFA World Cup 2026

HOUSTON: DR Congo held Portugal to a shock 1-1 draw in their Group K fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Houston Stadium on Wednesday.

Joao Neves opened the scoring in the sixth minute for Portugal with a fabulous header. This proved to be the only bright moment in the game for the Team of the Shields.

They maintained possession for a long time and, with fewer attempts on goal, DR Congo sensed an opportunity to score an equalizer.

The moment came in the added half-time when Yoane Wissa brilliantly used his head to score an equalizer. Newcastle striker Yoane used Arthur Masuaku’s cross from six yards to score a historic goal — DR Congo’s first World Cup goal.

Following the first half, DR Congo defended well and never allowed the opposition to capitalize despite their desperate attempts.

For much of the time, Ronaldo never looked like he was in the game, with the two best chances for him coming in the second half. The Al-Nassr striker was twice involved in low cut-backs from substitute Francisco Conceicao but narrowly missed the target both times.

The Congolese were matching the Portuguese, though, and 35-year-old veteran striker Cedric Bakambu shrugged aside Bruno Fernandes, but his shot came back off the near post.

Eventually, the match ended in a stalemate with both teams awarded one point each.

Portugal will face Uzbekistan in Houston on Tuesday, 23 June, while  DR Congo head to Mexico for their next Group encounter against Colombia in Guadalajara on 24 June
