Djokovic edges Krygios to lift seventh Wimbledon title, fourth in a row

LONDON: Novak Djokovic recorded a streak of fourth consecutive Wimbledon title after the top seed handed down a defeat to Australian Nick Krygios in the final on Centre Court, here on Sunday.

Serbian star sealed his seventh Wimbledon title after he dominated the opponent by 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-3), matching Pete Sampras’ tally and just one short of Roger Federer’s men’s singles record of eight at All England Club.

The title put Djokovic ahead of Roger Federer and just after the Spaniard Rafael Nadal on the all-time list of highest Grand Slams as he clinched his 21st Grand Slam title.

The top seed has now won seven of the last 11 Wimbledon titles and joined Federer, Sampras, and Bjorn Borg to become the fourth men to win consecutive four Wimbledon titles.

The 35-year-old Djokovic got off to a slower start as Krygios initially appeared to dominate in his first Grand Slam final and beat the Serb in the first set.

Djokovic, on the other hand, was quick to bounce back and was in his sublime form as he finished the game in four sets.

In the second set, Djokovic broke Krygios early to take a 3-1 lead and eventually ended up winning the set 6-3.

The dramatic third set tied at 4-4 when Djokovic, broke the Australian to go up 5-4 after being down to 0-40. He then held serve to win the set. Despite facing several breakpoints from Kyrgios in a few tense games, Djokovic retained his composure to win the third set.

The fourth set went all the way to the tie-breaker where Serb drew more errors from his opponent to clinch the victory after leading the tie-breaker by 7-3.
