Cricket South Africa announces new six-team T20 league

JOHANNESBURG: The Cricket South Africa (CSA), in association with SuperSport, introduced a new franchise-based T20 league, which will take place in January 2023.

In an official statement released by the CSA, the cricket governing body shared the details regarding the new league.

According to the details, the first edition of the league will be played in January next year, immediately after the conclusion of South Africa’s tour to Australia. The league will also feature foreign players and the recruitment of the players will be completed after the auction; scheduled to take place at a later date.

The tournament will comprise six privately-owned teams, which will face each other twice in a round-robin format before the top three sides advance to the playoffs. Over the course of three to four weeks, 33 matches will be contested.

The event will be managed by a new organisation founded by CSA and SuperSport. According to the press release, “the corporation is aiming at a very attractive player compensation bill per team that will challenge other leagues across the world outside of the IPL.”
