Chennai to host opener as BBL 2026-27 complete schedule unveiled

MELBOURNE: Cricket Australia (CA) has announced the full schedule for the Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27, with the season opener set to be held in India for the first time.

As per the schedule, the tournament will return on Christmas Eve for the first time in four years, while the final will be held on Australia Day, marking the first BBL decider on the public holiday in two years after previous scheduling changes due to cultural sensitivities.

The 44-match competition will conclude the regular season with back-to-back double-headers on January 16 and 17 before the four-team finals series begins with the Qualifier on January 19. The championship match will be held on January 26, with a reserve day in place if required.

Cricket Australia said the schedule was designed to avoid a clash with the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur, while also making use of the Australia Day public holiday.

Meanwhile, Australia Test players are likely to miss the final stages of the tournament as they prepare for the tour of India after the conclusion of the Trans-Tasman Trophy against New Zealand.

The governing body has also reduced interstate travel in an effort to ease player workloads.

Teams will face their lightest travel schedule in four seasons, with fewer instances of matches being played in quick succession. An extra day’s break has also been added between the Challenger and the final, following concerns about travel demands during last season’s knockout phase.

Cricket Australia has also introduced an additional day’s break between the Challenger and the final to avoid a repeat of last season’s demanding travel schedule. Runners-up Sydney Sixers were forced to fly across the country to Perth three times in six days during the knockout stage of BBL 15.

Canberra will host three BBL matches, while Melbourne will stage nine fixtures, including both Melbourne derbies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The schedule also retains marquee fixtures on Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with all eight clubs set to play home matches before Christmas and again during the final week of the regular season.
