The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has adopted a cautious stance regarding its upcoming five-match T20I series against Pakistan, originally scheduled to begin on May 25, as tensions in the region continue to unfold.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday, the BCB confirmed that it is actively coordinating with both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad to ensure the safety of its players currently participating in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10.
Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain (Lahore Qalandars) and pacer Nahid Rana (Peshawar Zalmi) are the two players currently involved in the PSL.
“The BCB is in active coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad to ensure that all necessary measures are in place to guarantee the security of our players,” the board stated in a release.
BCB President Faruque Ahmed, while speaking to a local sports outlet, said the board was closely monitoring the evolving situation and would wait a few more days before taking a final decision on the tour.
“We are really working on the current situation (as far as going to Pakistan for the T20I series), and it can wait for another three to four days,” said Faruque.
“Let’s see how it progresses, but at the moment our main concern is regarding the two players (Nahid Rana and Rishad Hossain) who are currently in Pakistan playing in the PSL.”
Despite the uncertainty, it’s worth noting that the BCB has already announced a 16-member squad for both the UAE and Pakistan T20I series, naming Litton Das as captain. Mahedi Hasan has been appointed vice-captain.
They are first set to travel to the United Arab Emirates for a short T20I series, with two matches scheduled in Sharjah on May 17 and 19. The five-match T20I series in Pakistan is, for now, set to run from May 25 to June 3.
Litton Das (captain), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Jaker Ali, Rishad Hossain, Mahedi Hasan (vice-captain), Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Nahid Rana, Shoriful Islam.
