Australia suffer major blow ahead of Champions Trophy 2025

Australia suffered a major blow ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 as key all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the eight-team event due to a back injury.

The injury setback for the 33-year-old was announced by Cricket Australia (CA), because of the worsening of a back issue he had during the summer at home.

“Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s Champion’s Trophy with ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction,” CA said in a statement today.

According to CA, Marsh was ruled out from the forthcoming event by the Australian men’s medical team and the National Selection Panel due to an injury that has not improved enough with therapy.

“The National Selection Panel and Australian men’s medical team ruled Marsh out of the Champions Trophy with the injury which has not responded sufficiently to rehabilitation.

His lower back pain flared in recent weeks leading the NSP to make the longer term decision for Marsh to complete a more extended period of rehabilitation.”

“Mitchell Marsh will now undergo a period of further rest and rehabilitation as part of his return to play plan,” CA stated

Marsh went through a difficult home season where he lost his Test place to Beau Webster for the final match against India at the SCG.

The all-rounder made 73 runs in seven innings and performed a limited role with the ball during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His fitness was a regular topic of conversation during the five-match series.

Meanwhile, Australia has not announced any replacement for Marsh—teams can make squad changes without ICC approval until February 11, after which modifications require ICC Technical Committee consent.

Australian Squad: Pat Cummins (c), Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
