Australia beat Sri Lanka in a super over thriller

SYDNEY: Australia have defeated Sri Lanka in the super over in the second T20I to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, here on Sunday.

Set to chase just six in the super over, Marcus Stoinis hit two consecutive boundaries to Wanindu Harasanga to guide his side over the line with three balls to spare.

Earlier, Australian pacer – Josh Hazlewood held his nerve calm in the one-over eliminator and only conceded four runs.

In the second innings, set to chase 165, Sri Lanka finished at 164-8 in 20 overs, thanks to their opener Pathum Nissanka, who anchored the innings with his gritty 73 while his side was losing the wickets at the other end.

The touring captain – Dasun Shanaka also chipped in with his valuable 34 off just 19 deliveries but, remained unlucky as he was run-out in the 16th over.

In the last over, however, the lower-order batter Dushmantha Chameera also smashed an important boundary on the last ball of the inning when his side needed five runs.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood starred; taking three wickets, while Pat Cummins, Stoinis, Kane Richardson, and Adam Zampa claimed one wicket apiece.

Batting first, Australia also finished at 164 in 20 overs but at the cost of six wickets. After having an average start to their innings, Josh Inglis strengthened the inning with a brilliant. The right-handed batter top-scored with 48 – missing his well-deserved half-century by a mere two runs. He faced 32 deliveries and smashed five boundaries.

The rest of the batters, on the other hand, also chipped in with valuable contributions to help their side finish at 168 in the allotted overs.

For Sri Lanka, Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva claimed two wickets each, while Nuwan Thusara and Maheesh Theekshana struck out a batter apiece.
