ABU DHABI: Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews claimed a hattrick to help Northern Warriors edge Morrisville Samp Army by nine runs in a close Abu Dhabi T10 League match at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.
Samp Army invited Warriors to bat first in the second match of the Abu Dhabi T10 League and inflicted early damage as Kennar Lewis departed in the third over with 24 runs on the board.
Hazratullah Zazai remained firm on one end, while Qais Ahmed picked back-to-back wickets from the other end to leave the Warriors reeling at 47-3 in the sixth over.
Zazai also went back to the dugout in the next over after scoring 20 off 18 with the help of two sixes.
Colin Munro then took responsibility and scored an unbeaten 15-ball 36, featuring two boundaries and three sixes to guide his side to 103-5 in 10 overs.
Qais Ahmed led the bowling charts with the brilliants figures of 2-12 in two overs.
Samp Army had a turbulent start to the chase as they lost their first three wickets in three overs with 31 runs on the board.
Skipper Moeen Ali counter-attacked from his end but he could not find enough support from the other end as wickets kept falling at an alarming rate.
Moeen Ali’s 23-ball 37, which featured two boundaries and as many sixes, ended in the final over bowled by Angelo Mathews, who went on to take two more wickets to complete his hat trick.
Morrisville Samp Army’s innings ended at 94-8 in ten overs.
Mathews returned with figures of 3-19, while Abhimanyu Mithun and James Neesham picked two wickets each.
