AB de Villiers confirms comeback, set to play for South Africa in THIS tournament

The former South Africa captain and star batter AB de Villiers is set to make his return to cricket this July, four years after retiring from all formats of the game.

The right-handed batter retired from international cricket in 2018, however, he continued to play franchise cricket until 2021. He finally decided to hang up his boots from all forms of cricket in 2021.

AB de Villiers recently expressed his interest to play again and now he has confirmed that he will be returning to the field to lead South Africa Champions at the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025.

“Four years ago, I retired from all cricket because I just didn’t feel the urge to play anymore,” he said.

“Well, time has passed, and my young sons have started playing the game. We’ve been playing more and more often in the garden, and, well, it feels as though some kind of flame has been lit again.

“So, I am heading back to the gym and the nets, and I’ll be ready for WCL in July.”

De Villiers made his last playing appearance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

For the unversed, the World Championship of Legends (WCL) is an exhilarating T20 tournament that showcases an impressive lineup of retired and non-contracted cricket players, representing their national teams.

The upcoming edition marks the second instalment of the WCL, following the inaugural tournament held in 2024, where the Indian team, led by the legendary Yuvraj Singh, emerged as champions.
