LAHORE: Former International Cricket Council’s (ICC) elite panel umpire Asad Rauf died on Thursday in Lahore after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Rauf, 66, was a renowned Pakistani umpire who officiated in 64 Tests (49 as on-field umpire and 15 as TV umpire), 139 ODIs and 28 T20Is since starting his umpiring career in 2000. He was elevated to ICC’s elite panel in 2006.
Rauf suffered chest pain when he was returning from his shop and then passed away, confirmed Rauf’s brother Tahir.
Prior to his umpiring career, Rauf had also played first-class cricket as a middle-order batter.
Rauf contributed greatly to improve the reputation of Pakistani umpires in international cricket along with Aleem Dar before the neutral umpires era.
