Hetmyer misses World Cup flight, West Indies drop him from squad

KARACHI: West Indies have dropped left-handed batter Shimron Hetmyer from their ICC men’s T20 World Cup squad after he missed the rescheduled flight to Australia.

Shamarah Brooks has replaced the left-hander in the world cup squad, confirmed Cricket West Indies (CWI) in a media statement and also informed the International Cricket Council about its decision on Monday.

Hetmyer was originally set to depart on October 1 but due to personal reasons, he requested CWI to delay his flight.

CWI then rescheduled his flight two days later, but on the morning of the flight, Hetmyer informed Jimmy Adam, West Indies Director of Cricket, that he would not be able to reach the airport in time.

Adams said Hetmeyer had been warned about the repercussions of missing the flight.

“It was made clear to him that if there were any further delays and issues with his travel to Australia then we would have no choice but to replace him in the squad, as we are not prepared to compromise the team’s ability to prepare for this extremely important global event,” Adams said.

West Indies are placed in Group B of the first Round at the T20 World Cup and set to face  Scotland, Zimbabwe and Ireland in order to make their way into the Super 12 stage of the tournament.
